Technical Theatre

Step behind the curtain and explore the magic that brings a stage production to life! In this hands-on course, students will dive into the world of technical theatre, learning the essential skills that support every great performance. From set design and construction to lighting, sound, props, costumes, and stage management, students will collaborate to create the behind-the-scenes magic that makes theatre happen.

Students will have the opportunity to work on real CAPA productions during required Technical Theatre Practicum, practice teamwork, and develop creative problem-solving skills in a fun and supportive environment. No previous theatre experience is needed—just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to get your hands a little dirty!

This practicum-based course offers hands-on experience in the various disciplines of technical theatre, including set construction, lighting, sound, props, costumes, and stage management. Students will apply foundational knowledge by actively participating on the technical production team of either the CAPA JR or CAPA Straight Play Class performances in addition to Dreamcast and CAPA Company Showcase. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, problem-solving, time management, and professional theatre practices.

Participants will rotate through different technical areas based on production needs and personal areas of interest, working under the guidance of the instructor and production staff. Students are expected to engage in both class instruction and Practicum hours outside of regular class time, including evenings and weekends during tech rehearsals and performances.
