The National Endowment for the Arts says,  “Students who study the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. Research shows sustained learning in music and theater correlates strongly with higher achievement in both math and reading.” In addition to the academic benefits, performing arts intrinsically build a strong sense of self, community, and belonging. The arts are worthwhile, needful, and FUN!

Melanie Prince, Director

Melanie Prince, Director

Melanie Prince has been teaching Acting and Musical Theatre for almost two decades. She earned her BA in theatre with emphasis in Acting and Musical Theatre from California State University Sacramento. She lead a Northern CA charter high school theatre program for three years and has also owned and operated a children's performing arts school in Nashville TN.  She spent three amazing years working with Estes Tarver at Moonlight Stage Company in Raleigh. After realizing the need for strong acting and arts programs in the Western Wake Region, Melanie founded CAPA, Carolina Academy of Performing Arts. She is the Artistic Director of CAPA and primary director and acting instructor. Melanie is represented by Terri Dollar of KU talent. Among her favorite roles and director's credits are Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Mrs. Cratchet in David Ira Wood III's "A Christmas Carol" that afforded her life long dream of performing abroad. She treasures the experiences she's had performing with her children most of all. Acting is a family affair and she has spent countless hours on commercial, television and major motion picture sets.  Growing talent in others and helping them to express themselves is as rewarding to her as being on stage herself for they, “are such stuff as dreams are made of” (Shakespeare).

Jill Smith, Musical Director

Jill Smith, Musical Director

Jill Hardin Smith grew up in West Texas, the daughter of an orchestra teacher. She studied violin and piano as a youth but her love of singing eventually won her full attention and she was awarded a scholarship to the Texas Tech University School of Music, where she graduated with a degree in music education with an emphasis in vocal and choral music. During college, she was a member of the esteemed Madrigal Singers who performed throughout the community and toured Europe. She also enjoyed being a part of the college musical theater scene and after graduation, performed with the Fort Worth opera for two seasons before starting her family. Jill was a school choir director in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for 4 years and was the education director for a private music school, developing curriculum for their Pre-K program and group piano classes.  Since moving to NC, she has taught many private students, directed the Peak City Singers of Apex to a Gold Medal in the statewide Senior Games and held the title of Music Director for several shows. She’s also requested as a music substitute for area school teachers. Everywhere she has lived, Jill has been a church musician, uplifting others as she directs children and adult choirs in worship services and through her solo performances.
