Frequently Asked Questions - CAPA Company
Can my child participate in CAPA Jr. or CAPA Kids and also be in a CAPA Company?
- Absolutely! We encourage students to apply the skills they are developing in Company to live musical productions such as CAPA Jr., CAPA Kids, and Summer Stock.
What qualifies as an excused absence or late arrival to Company rehearsals?
- Excused absences include participation in school musicals, choir concerts, and band performances. We ask that family vacations and other non-school events are not scheduled during CAPA rehearsals, as consistent attendance is essential—especially in the spring when students are preparing for the Company Showcase.
What is DreamCast?
- DreamCast is an optional fall performance opportunity that allows students to showcase their talents in a fun, collaborative environment. Precision Company students perform group numbers, while Pre-Professional Company students perform a cut from their “dream role” song. DreamCast is typically held in November, the Friday before Thanksgiving.
Are there additional opportunities for CAPA Company students?
- Yes! CAPA Company students may audition for our Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) Troupe, which we attend every even-numbered year. They are also encouraged to participate in CAPA Jr., CAPA Kids, and Summer Stock productions, attend master classes with guest teaching artists, and apply to become a Teacher Assistant (TA) for leadership experience and/or class credit.
What is JTF?
- JTF (Junior Theatre Festival) is the world’s largest celebration of young people performing musical theatre. Held each January in Atlanta, Georgia, this three-day event brings together troupes from across the globe. Highlights include performing a 15-minute cut from a Broadway Junior musical for adjudication by theatre professionals, student workshops, a New Works Showcase premiering upcoming Broadway Junior titles, and a Grand Finale Concert featuring Broadway performers. CAPA attends every even-numbered year, and participation is open to CAPA Company members ages 12 and older.
Are there additional fees?
- Yes. There are two $75 supply fees per season, charged on November 1 and February 1. These fees help cover the cost of costumes, music rights, and printed materials for the season.
What if finances are preventing my child from auditioning?
- CAPA Theatre, our nonprofit organization, offers need-based scholarships. Please email Scholarships@mycapa.org to request an application.
What is the audition process for CAPA Company?
- Auditions include a dance call and singing a short cut of a song. All audition materials and instructions will be emailed one week prior to auditions. We strongly recommend the CAPA Company Audition Workshop—especially for new students—as it teaches the dance call, builds audition skills, and allows faculty additional time to get to know each student.
What if we are unable to attend the in-person audition?
- While in-person auditions are strongly preferred, we do accept video auditions. Once audition materials are released, please email us for video submission instructions.
Does my child need to audition every season?
- Yes. All students audition each year so we can determine the best placement based on age, ability, and where they will grow most as both an individual and ensemble member.
What if my child is not placed in a CAPA Company?
- Students will receive class recommendations to continue developing their skills and are encouraged to audition again the following season.
