What is CAPA?

Carolina Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) offers elite performing arts training through two distinct programs:

     CAPA Conservatory

  • An intensive, audition-only musical theatre program for students ages 6–12th grade. Students are placed into a Company following their audition. The program runs September through May and includes weekly training in voice, dance, and acting.

     Open Enrollment Classes

  • Open to students ages 4 through 12th grade—no audition required. Students can explore Musical Theatre, Dance, Acting, Improv, Voice, Film, and Technical Theatre. Flexible enrollment allows students to take one or multiple classes.

CAPA’s Musical Theatre Company is an elite, conservatory-style training program for dedicated young performers. Led by Founder and Artistic Director, Melanie Prince, the program provides industry-aligned training in a supportive, growth-focused environment.

     Training & Curriculum

     Students participate in weekly classes focused on:

     In addition to technical training, students develop:

Note: Conservatory participation requires a higher level of commitment and preparation.

How is tuition billed?

  • Tuition is set for the full season and divided into equal monthly payments (due on the 10th of each month). 
  • Families joining mid-season will receive prorated tuition. 
  • Production tuition is billed monthly based on the rehearsal schedule. 
  • A $25 annual registration fee per family (September–August) applies. 
  • Payments more than 5 days late incur a $25 late fee. 
  • Costume and supply fees may apply and are listed at registration. 
  • Accepted payment methods include credit card, ACH, check, Venmo, and cash. 

Can I enroll at any time?

     CAPA Conservatory

  • Enrollment is by audition only. Auditions are held each August for the September–May season. Families who move to the area mid-season may request an evaluation by emailing CAPA@mycapa.org.

     Open Enrollment Classes

  • Students may enroll through February 5, pending availability. Tuition will be prorated based on the enrollment date.

Can I disenroll?

     CAPA Conservatory

  • This is a yearlong commitment. Full tuition is owed once a placement is accepted.

     Open Enrollment Classes

  • Students may withdraw at any time before February 5 with 30 days’ notice. After February 5, withdrawals are not permitted, and full remaining tuition is due.

What if my child has a conflict?

It is important for us to be aware of any scheduling conflicts. A conflict includes a late arrival, early dismissal, or missing a full class/session. Please email Ellie@mycapa.org to report any conflicts.

     CAPA Conservatory

  • Conflicts are accepted for school performances and other mandatory school events. Consistent weekly attendance is expected
  • Please note: No conflicts are permitted for Super Saturday or Tech/Performance Week.

     Open Enrollment Classes

  • We strongly encourage regular attendance, but we understand that occasional conflicts may arise.

     Productions (CAPA Jr., CAPA Kids, Summer Stock)

  • Students are allowed up to 3 conflicts to participate in a production.
  • Please note: No conflicts are permitted for Super Saturday or Tech/Performance Week.

Does CAPA offer scholarships?

Yes. CAPA Theatre, Inc. offers need-based scholarships for classes and productions. For more information or to request an application, please email: Scholarships@mycapa.org

Does CAPA produce musicals?

Yes—CAPA offers multiple performance opportunities throughout the year:

  • CAPA Kids – “Kids” version musicals presented within a weekly class format for 1st-6th grade students
  • CAPA Jr. Productions – Two Junior productions each year (Fall and Spring) for ages 8-17
  • Summer Stock Workshops – Two full-length musicals produced each summer for ages 8-college students

Why are parent volunteer hours required for productions?

Productions rely on community support to keep costs manageable.

  • Each family is required to complete 5 volunteer hours per child, per production, or may opt out by paying an additional $100 per child, per production.

What should I expect for an audition?

  • Audition materials are provided approximately one week in advance. Auditions typically include:
  • A dance call (with video instruction provided) 
  • A short song selection (provided by CAPA) 
  • Callbacks may be required and can include acting sides.

What is Showcase?

     Open Enrollment Classes

  • Students perform in a final Showcase during their last class session. This is an informal presentation for family and friends.

     CAPA Conservatory

  • Company students perform in the Annual Showcase, a fully produced theatrical event with a mandatory Tech Week. This ticketed performance is open to the public and takes place the Friday before Memorial Day.

What is DreamCast?

DreamCast is a CAPA Conservatory tradition that combines performance with community giving during the holiday season.

  • Pre-Professional Company students perform a solo or duet selection 
  • Precision Company students perform a group number 
  • Participation is optional but highly encouraged–it’s a magical evening of giving back.

DreamCast is held in November, the Friday before Thanksgiving.

What is JTF?

The Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) is the world’s largest celebration of young people performing musical theatre, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia.

     Festival Highlights:

  • A 15-minute Broadway Junior performance adjudicated by theatre professionals 
  • Workshops for students, parents, and educators 
  • New Works Showcase featuring upcoming titles 
  • A Grand Finale Concert with Broadway performers 

CAPA attends JTF every even-numbered year, offering students a high-level performance opportunity and unforgettable experience. 

Participation is open to CAPA Musical Theatre Company students ages 12 and older.
